How to be Kawaii

Being kawaii is all about looking Japanese cute. It can be a little over-the-top, and is similar to Harajuku style, except that it is less extreme.

1. Keep up with the latest trends by doing some research on the Internet. Columns like Tokyopop's Kawaii Culture provide information on the latest kawaii trends. You can also read magazines like Shojo Beat.

2. Do not be afraid to stand out and be noticed. Don't worry about what people think of you.

3. Layer well - this is important. Also, wacky patterns are super. Wear as many colors together as you want and don't care if your clothes clash.

4. Wear bright colors. Smile and/or giggle lot. Wear pink a lot and wear cute characters on your clothes. Jeans and a t-shirt are kind of boring, unless you add to it with cute accessories, and maybe a hat. Wear something wild and crazy. Also, try to stay away from labels a little.

5. Sport toys and/or bags with characters like Hello Kitty, Chococat, or My Melody. Anime characters can also be very kawaii.

6. Wear ruffles and pastel or bright colors.

7. Make your own clothes. This is a great idea and if you want, you can also modify pre-made clothes which can turn out looking really good. Making clothes is not for everyone, though.

8. If you choose to buy clothes, you can find some really kawaii clothes at places like Hot Topic, or any store that carries clothes imported from Japan.

9. Accessorize! Cute, fuzzy accessories are definitely kawaii. Make sure you stock up on Sanrio and other cute animal accessories. Also, you can wear fuzzy animal hats, or keychains around your neck. Don't be afraid to be a little wild!

10. Style your hair like a manga character. If you apply lots of firm gel to thick chunks of hair, you can look like Super Saiyan. You can get hair like Chi from Chobits by parting hair in front of the ears and securing it with a round clip. Dying or streaking your with hair unnatural colors, like pink, can also be really kawaii. You can use bright colored hair extensions if you don't want to ruin your hair. Opt for bright colored hair clips and headbands.

11. If you wear makeup, keep it light. The natural look is way more kawaii than a face plastered with makeup.

How to Dress Harajuku Style

Gwen Stefani first introduced Harajuku style to mainstream America through her fashion line and the Harajuku Girls that appear everywhere with her. This style originated in the Harajuku shopping district in Tokyo, Japan. There, fashion is a form of art. And now, that art is embraced in the United States.

Step1

Pick a Harajuku style. To some, it might look like Harajuku style consists of throwing mismatched pieces together in one outfit, but it's much more organized. There are five different categories of Harajuku style, and they don't mix well.

Step2
Mix feminine and elegant clothes with gothic accessories. This is the classic Harajuku style called Gothic Lolita.

Step3
Overdo your makeup to create Punk Harajuku style. Top it off with over-the-top accessories.

Step4
Dress like your favorite cartoon, game or anime character. To pull off Cosplay Harajuku, spare no expense to copy the look of that character.

Step5
Choose very bright colors and wild accessories for Decora Harajuku. This is different from Punk Harajuku because your makeup isn't over the top.

Step6
Find your inner child for Kawaii Harajuku. Look cute with outfits that are playful and childish.

Step7
Create your own look. Pick through your closet and decide what you can use to have Harajuku style. Be creative when you put together an outfit. Harajuku style is known for thinking outside the box.

Step8
Wear clothes of mixed genres, mixed influences and even mixed patterns with weird shapes. All of this fits into the Harajuku style.

Step9
Add a theatrical pop. Outrageous accessories and overdone makeup finish off the Harajuku look. Add bright colors around your eyes for maximum impact. The best thing about Harajuku style is that you can always wash off the makeup and rearrange your accessories for a completely different look.
